Design and Technology
At Yorkley School, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination and to ask questions about how things work. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art.
Our five drivers underpin design and Technology:
- Active Adventure
- Building Me
- Communication
- Creativity
- Belonging.
We want children to understand the design process from the initial idea to evaluate the finished product and comprehend how design and technology underpin every aspect of their daily lives. We teach them to design to criteria, evaluate designs and prototypes, suggest and make improvements, and evaluate finished products. Children are given opportunities to develop skills in textiles, construction materials, and mechanical and electrical systems (including coding). They are able to make and cook a range of meals safely and hygienically and understand how to eat a healthy, balanced diet. They will have the skills to prepare meals for themselves or for their families. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers.
