Yorkley Primary School

Art and Design

At Yorkley school we want children to be able to express themselves artistically across different mediums and by utilising a range of technical skills. At our school, children will be able to understand art as a medium for expression and communication, and how colour and composition are used to impact the viewer.

Children will view art as a process that begins with observation, practice, and drafting, before commencing to a final piece. Children will be able to create sketches or thumbnails to explore ideas and will know the importance of practising a technical skill before using it to create a piece of artwork. We use a range of artists, historical and contemporary, from different countries and backgrounds, to inspire and teach our children.

The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth; for example, by sketching historical artefacts in detail, researching geographical locations to support their work on landscape painting or using art as a medium to express emotion and thought to enhance their personal, social and emotional development.

Art is underpinned by our five drivers:

  • Active Adventure
  • Building Me
  • Communication
  • Creativity
  • Belonging.
