My name is Shelley Bidmead and I am the Family Support Worker here at Yorkley Primary School. I have worked with children and families for over 11 years.
A Family Support Worker can provide emotional support, guidance and encouragement to children and families.
At Yorkley School we understand that children learn better when families, schools and children work together.
I work with an open-door policy and encourage families to come in for an informal conversation when support is required. I work with multiple outside agencies to establish the very best support for you and your children. If you have concerns or are experiencing any personal difficulties, sharing these concerns can often help. I can support without judgement and signpost you to the most relevant agency.
What does a Family Support Worker do?

A FSW is able to offer impartial support, advice and guidance to parents/carers.
Advice and support is confidential, although concerns relating to the safeguarding of children will always be dealt with in accordance to the school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.
I may not have all the answers, but hopefully we can work together to find them!

Support for pupils includes:
· Promoting good attendance and punctuality
· Promoting self-esteem and confidence
· Promoting positive behaviour and positive attitudes to learning

Support for families includes:

Finally, as a mum myself, I appreciate how precious your children are and it is my aim to build strong relationships with you so every child is happy, thriving and fulfilling their potential here at Yorkley Primary School.

Parental Feedback:
“At the start, we didn’t get on. I felt very anxious about talking about home life and what was going on, but as time progressed I understood they were helping me and they have been amazing. I feel like I have had so much support. I now say you should be upfront and ask for help. They don’t want to work against you they want to work with you and my child has come such a long way!”
“My son really struggled settling back into school after lockdown. Although I aimed to maintain a school routine at home, he struggled to socially adjust back into class and Yorkley School have been amazing at settling him back in to the routines. He’s attending his friendship club and loves it. I have also been consistent with the school, completing the Triple P course which I found really useful, as it has loads of positive teaching and helpful tips. We could see an improvement in his behaviour within a couple of weeks and he’s continued to be the sweet loving boy he is, coming home with Star of the Week and green slips for doing nice things”.
“Yorkley School offers its children a wonderfully nurturing and supportive environment, second to none. Staff dedication to the whole school is inspiring and Mrs Bidmead is incredibly personable, understanding, patient and so knowledgeable to all aspects of well-being and pastoral support. The speed of signposting and offering extra support where needed has been incredibly helpful for our child and our family, and for that we will be eternally grateful. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Yorkley School to any parent, it’s truly loving and caring, as well as setting high expectations and attainment for all its pupils – thank you everyone at Yorkley!”
“I would just like to say a massive thank you for all the help and support you have given to us over the past year and a half. You have gone above and beyond your normal duties in order to ensure our family issues are resolved with the right support. I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for your amazing help and your continued support, I don’t know what we would have done and how we would have got through the past 18 months. From all the referrals you have put in to get us the help we needed, your openness and willingness to make sure we are always ok is something I can’t put into words to express my thanks to you!”
