Eyes to the Sky at Yorkley School!
For their best science experience YET, Yorkley School will be launching a weather balloon to the edge of space.
It will be watched by the whole school, the balloon will be launched on Wednesday 12th June between 10.30 and 11am [WEATHER PERMITTING]. Children at Yorkley School have been sending invitations out to the local MP and other celebrities in the hope that they will join them. “This activity will enrich our science learning,” says Emily, Class 4, “and inviting other people to join us will make it even better!”
Weather balloons are high gas balloons that can be tracked in the Earth’s atmosphere. They are used for gathering data to predict the weather. Yorkley Primary will be using their helium weather balloon to conduct experiments. Cameras will also be attached that will take photos at 24,000m above Earth. They will also be attaching a payload to the balloon, containing seeds.
The seeds that will be sent into the atmosphere will become radiated. Yorkley pupils will then be looking at how this effects a plant’s growth by comparing them to a control group of seeds kept safely on Earth!
The event will launch the children’s learning on a wide range of topics including space, the Earth and its atmosphere, and plants. It will also give pupils a chance to see how their learning can be applied to the real world.
Remember to keep a look out above the Forest of Dean to see if you can spot it—the children would love to see any photographs of the balloon from around the local area. They can be sent into school by email or post:
