At Yorkley School, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination and to ask questions
about how things work. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics,
science, computing and art.
Design and Technology is underpinned by our five drivers: Active Adventure, Building Me, Communication,
Creativity and Belonging.
We want children to understand the design process from initial idea to evaluating the finished product and
comprehend how design and technology underpins every aspect of their daily lives. We teach them to design
to a criteria, evaluate designs and prototypes, suggest and make improvements, and evaluate finished
products. Children are given opportunities to develop skills in textiles, construction materials, mechanical and
electrical systems (including coding). They are able to make and cook a range of meals safely and hygienically
and understand how to eat a healthy, balanced diet. They will have the skills to prepare meals for themselves
or for their families. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and
present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and
risk-takers.
