Yorkley School Governors
Welcome To Yorkley School
As Governors we have a responsibility to ensure that our school provides the best possible education for all children and that everyone is safe and supported.
We work closely with the Head Teacher to create a vision and ethos for the school developing plans, policies and procedures to enable us to influence the strategic direction of the school.
Governors set the school budget and are responsible for ensuring that the best value is achieved with the school resources.
We ensure that the school meets all statutory requirements and duties including Safeguarding and Equalities and the delivery of the National Curriculum.
As Governors we are responsible for the performance management of the Head Teacher and to ensure all staff undergo performance management and receive any appropriate training and development opportunities they require. We ask questions and receive written information that allows us to support and challenge the Head Teacher as part of our monitoring role within the school.
We are accountable to parents and the wider community for the performance of the school and we visit the school regularly to meet pupils, staff and parents.
Our Governors are from a range of different backgrounds including parents, staff, the local authority and the wider community in Yorkley.
As a Governing Body we meet at least three times a year and we delegate some functions to the three committees listed below:

Meet the Governors:
I have 2 children, both of whom attended Yorkley School, with the youngest leaving at the end of the 2018-19 academic year. My wife and I moved to Yorkley at the end of 2004. My background is in Electronic Engineering, and I currently work for Airbus in Filton. I have been a governor since 2012, initially as a parent governor, then as a co-opted governor.
I was elected chair at the start of the 2018-19 year. As chair it is my responsibility to work closely with the head on topics such as the strategic direction of the school, and to ensure that governors work effectively to challenge and support the school, in order to fulfil their responsibilities as the governing body.
If you see me at any school event, please feel free to approach me if you have any questions about governors and what we do, or the school in general.
I live and work locally and both my children have been through the school and now moved on to secondary school. I have been a governor at the since Spring 2019 and currently I am vice chair of the Governing Board. My background is in local government and I have a keen interest in the outdoors and the environment. As a Governing Board we have to make some tough decisions at times but it is also very rewarding working together and seeing the school, pupils and staff develop.
I have 21 years’ experience of teaching including 8 years as Primary Headteacher at Yorkley School. In 2019/2020 I was asked to also be the Executive Headteacher for a neighbouring school requiring sponsorship. I am Co-chair of West Gloucestershire Schools Partnership (WGSP), a partnership consisting of 41 Primary/Special Schools. Within our partnership we aim to raise the aspirations, attainment and life chances of all pupils by working together to raise standards in education, sharing good practice, commissioning high quality CPD and supporting each other. I have been a co-opted Governor at Wyedean Secondary School since Sept 2018 and am currently on the Teaching Learning and Assessment committee as well as being their PE governor. My hobbies involve spending time with my family, walking our rescue dog, gym sessions and running marathons and ultras.
Hi, I am Tracy and I have taught at Yorkley Primary School Since September 2009. I am currently teaching in Class 1 which I love and I have been a staff governor for the past 5 years. As an employee, I bring the governing body an understanding of the school’s ethos and culture. I give the staff a voice and contribute in partnership with the governors, to the strategic development of the school. I value the role of staff governor and take pride in being able to make a difference in school improvement.I live close to Yorkley and with my own children attending the school feel part of the close knit community that we serve. I spend my free time with my family and we’re either in the garden, woods or on the beach!
Alan Castle – Co-opted Governor
I have been a Co-opted Governor at Yorkley since November 1996 when both my children were at the school. I am now a member of the Performance and Standards Committee, chair the Personnel sub-committee and the nominated SEN and Pupil Premium Governor. Outside of school I work part time as a Chartered Engineer but most of my time is now taken up with training two dogs, photography, gardening and walking in the Forest.
Hello. My name is Amanda Perry and I’m a Parent Governor. I have two sons, aged 5 and 8, who both attend Yorkley School. I attended Yorkley between 1986-1992, so it’s safe to say I have a long standing interest in the School.
I have worked in Financial Services for over 16 years, 12 of which in leadership/ management roles. I most recently returned to managing a local Building Society since having my children and wanting a better work/life balance.
I love where we live, feel very proud of the community we live in and do as much as I can to contribute towards that. I enjoy spending time with my husband, 2 children and our much loved Boxer dogs! I love running (although slowly), walking with my family in the Forest and being at the beach. I am passionate about helping the School to be the best it can be and hope that my skill set can continue to support the school and make a positive contribution towards it’s continued success.
Charlotte Merryfield – Co-opted Governor
Hi, I’m Charlotte Merryfield and I’m a co-opted governor at Yorkley School.
Working as a youth worker in the week means I get to visit a lot of schools and youth clubs throughout Gloucestershire, working with young people who are suffering with their mental health or have experienced trauma in their lives. I will be able to draw upon this knowledge as a governor, by supporting and challenging the school’s safeguarding polices and how they work with the children through their PSHE classes.
In my spare time I am mostly hanging out with the kids, family and friends. If not, I’m reading, swimming or just chilling out on the sofa with a good boxset. I’m passionate about education and ensuring that we’re doing all we can to raise our children with great morals, self-esteem and confidence, which is why I am so excited and grateful to join Yorkley School’s governing body.

I currently manage a counselling agency based in Bristol that supports survivors of sexual abuse. I also work at the University of the West of England as an associate lecturer (Counselling and Psychotherapy MA – Psychology) In my spare time I like to spend time with my family, enjoying the outdoors and playing sports.

I moved to the Forest from Kent in 1995. I enjoy being part of my local community and children’s activities and clubs. I have been a self-employed electrician for many years. Antony Dufort is in his sixth year as a parent Governor at Yorkley school. He and his wife Dorota are both sculptors. (Antony sculpted the bronze miners’ memorial in Cinderford). They live in a converted chapel in Yorkley and hope to be able to invite children again to see their studio and work, when things return more to normal.
Hi There, My name is Rob Merryfield, I have twin girls who attend Yorkley school, and going way back I was a pupil of Yorkley School myself from 1983-89, so I jumped at the chance to become a governor of the school and offer my time and skill set to an establishment I truly hold dearly.
